Olive Jar Rim #BAH1993-1474. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an outside diameter of 9.2 cm, and stands 4 cm tall. The principal motif is a tonsured abbot standing dressed in a cowl; his halo indicates that he is a saint, standing with his abbot’s staff in his left hand and a buring torch as his emblem in his right. The staff, baculus was carried as the symbol of the pastoral duty.
There has been some despute to the identification to the person on the bench end, some say he cannot be identified while others have suggested the abbot to be St. Brendan, as his emblem in german documents is a burning torch, and St. brendan can be related back to Kirkjubø.
In the rounded top panel sits St. Olav enthroned. with a halo, crown, his long handed axe in his right and and the earth/orb in his left.
