Got together with a bunch of my buddies one morning and we all took tons of photos (1780) while another friend flew a drone over and around the arch to get the above photos (another 1739).
Here’s a screengrab that shows all the camera angles we captured, including the drone shots:
The arch is over 24 meters (80 feet) tall and it’s right in the middle of a high traffic intersection, so it presents many challenges, and I’m not even talking about all the trees around it.
It’s my first large-scale scan and I hit so many walls with getting it to come out well, largely because ZBrush has a 50 million polygon limit. Anyway, this is the first of many.

Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines; a piece of painted wall plaster. Some people in Roman Staines did rather well out of selling provisions to passing travellers; their houses had tiled roofs, Opus Signinum (concrete) floors, hypocaust flue tiles (under floor heating), window glass and painted walls. This is one of many fragments of painted wall plaster found in Staines.
If you look carefully you can see a groove on the back where the slaked lime/sand/aggregate plaster was attached to the wooden ‘wattle’ frame of the wall, and a thin fine smooth layer of crushed marble which is applied to the outer surface to provide a painting surface. Analysis of samples from Staines by the University of Leicester showed our painted plaster to be painted ‘buon fresco’, or when the plaster was still wet, meaning plastering and painting were completed in panels of one days work before the plaster dried.

During the construction of a new riverside wall in 1962 in London, the remains of an interesting ship were found. Dating evidence from the timbers and a coin found in the mast step placed the ship as likely being built, and sunk, during the Roman period, specifically in the 2nd Century CE. However, the ship was constructed in the Celtic tradition.
The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration. The late 14th century alabaster tomb of Goronwy ap Tudur and his wife Myfanwy, prominent members of the family which gave rise to the Tudor dynasty, is located at St Gredifael’s church in Penmynydd, Anglesey. When the tomb chest was originally carved it would undoubtedly have been one of the finest monuments of its time. It was originally situated in the friary in Llanfaes but following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, the tomb chest was dismantled and moved to its current location at St Gredifael’s near to the original family home of the Tudors.
The model was commissioned by the Church in Wales and completed by Gwynedd Archaeological Trust in 2014, prior to conservation work on the tomb and repairs to the church.
