Miao Dao are rather late comers to the family of Chinese swords. They didn’t appear until the fall of Qing dynasty (1911). Due to their massive sizes, they often get compared to western two handed swords and Japanese Ōdachi. Many of them feature pipe-back design （丁背） with very thick spines and relatively thin blades to significantly reduce weight. Such design is very close to the British 1821 cavalry/infantry sabre which managed to significantly lengthened the blade under the same benefit of weight reduction. This particular model is over 150cm long and weighs only about 1300g witha POB of 11cm! Two handed swords came and gone in Chinese history. Another period where they got significant uses was the Ming dynasty, famously used in the army of General Qi, Jiguang, who wrote treatises and admit being inspired by Japanese Shinkage-ryū. Same model just trying out a realistic whispery look. I have visited and revisited the hair model so many times, played around with so many settings, and with UE producing really realistic results, it seems like a waste of time. Although this hair is generated by brushed and styled hair curves, then using a hair card generator to make the thicker mass and finally my procedural hair for the strands. It went from bald to this in less than 2 hours, and most of the time is fiddling with the parameters in sketchfab. The UVs are also procedurally generated. The main difference between this and the other recently release version is that I tweaked it to have more hairs at the roots, and fewer at the ends. Seems very obvious but the nature of the geo closes at the ends, and with UVs generated evenly, it has the reverse effect. I admit if more time is spent on brushing the hair, and inserting extra cards down the parting I will get better coverage. Personal project of the last weeks, just for fun… I really enjoyed working in this piece, and it was tough, full of hard times and still could use a lot more work. Seden Society Puppet Theater Foundation is an important NGO that conserves mass puppet bodies, accessories and script documents. However, these relics are facing serious aging effect, such as surface cracking and peeling off, and the aging issue causes open demonstration and performance are not feasible. Besides, only few specific conservators can restore the relics, and the maintenance efficiency is very limited. Therefore, in this project, a SOP of 3D scanning for the mass puppet bodies is established to accelerate the collection of the puppet bodies’ original mesh models, and enable the modeling staff to fix mesh flaws digitally. These STL models can be preserved in the on-line database systematically, and demonstrated in a free 3D viewpoint. Furthermore, several scanned puppet prototypes are duplicated in an enlarged scale by the 3D printer for better display function in the following exhibitions.
