Julien’s gladiator demonstrates his complete mastery of anatomy, and also drapery at the rear of the statue. But it was the sculptor’s personal contribution which imbues the work with its sensitivity: the elegant proportions, unctuous modelling and delicate execution (the finesse of the hands, laurel leaves and strands of hair), the marble’s perfect finish and the rendering of textures (the polish of the shield and sword suggest their metallic brilliance).
Julien was exalting the heroism of a man overcoming his pain and stoically dying in silence. This is a scan of the Mobius model of Frazetta’s iconic painting, the Death Dealer. The majority of this model is scanned, however some of the smaller parts, like the shield, the sword, chain, bridle and reins were recreated in Solidworks, as they were too small to scan properly.

On January 18th 1935, Clark Hopkins, the field director at Dura-Europos, found three painted shields stacked on top of each other during an excavation. The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible.
The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J. Gute’s watercolor painting, “Wooden Shield Painted with Scenes from the Trojan War”. Another commssion. A greek shield with it’s spear rest modified into a guillotine, making it a lethal weapon.
The commissioner speficically ask for viking runes on the shield, indicating this equipment has been smithed and used throughout the edges. The runes spelled “Demonbane.” revealing its original purpose. I’ve tried to incorporate more geometry in my recent line of productions to preserve its original shape, hopefully it’s pleasing to the eye for you.
