Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines; a piece of painted wall plaster. Some people in Roman Staines did rather well out of selling provisions to passing travellers; their houses had tiled roofs, Opus Signinum (concrete) floors, hypocaust flue tiles (under floor heating), window glass and painted walls. This is one of many fragments of painted wall plaster found in Staines.
If you look carefully you can see a groove on the back where the slaked lime/sand/aggregate plaster was attached to the wooden ‘wattle’ frame of the wall, and a thin fine smooth layer of crushed marble which is applied to the outer surface to provide a painting surface. Analysis of samples from Staines by the University of Leicester showed our painted plaster to be painted ‘buon fresco’, or when the plaster was still wet, meaning plastering and painting were completed in panels of one days work before the plaster dried.

It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man. The fresco is part of a complex iconographic scheme and is chronologically the fourth in the series of panels depicting episodes from Genesis.
The painting has been reproduced in countless imitations and parodies.Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam is one of the most replicated religious paintings of all time.

In the mid-fifteenth century Fra Beato Angelico frescoed the Dominican Convent of San Marco where he used to live. The fresco of the Annunciation in the north corridor is set in a portico overlooking the garden of the Virgin. A very similar garden figures in another fresco of the convent depicting the apparition of Christ to Mary Magdalene who mistakes him for the gardener. A reference that underlies a long medieval tradition that linked the figure of Christ to the flower.
Two years ago, after reading these thoughts on a book by Didi-Huberman we came up with the idea of creating our first 3D painting: one of our favourite media to tell the infinite stories hidden in art.

Economic prosperity in the city of Antioch, a vital agricultural and commercial center at the crossroads of the Roman Empire and strategically located on the N-S-E-W axis of the silk road, created an extensive middle-class population that was wealthy, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and of course, liked a good party. Villas in this region were often opulently decorated with stunning wall frescos and floor mosaics, like this medallion of the wine god Bacchus. This floor mosaic was initially located in the entrance hall of a Roman villa as part of a much larger floor that included the similar mosaic also posted to this feed. As guests walked across the floor mosaic, these images of the wine god Bacchus and his “Thiasus,” or retinue of dedicated followers, would have created an atmosphere of wine-drinking revelry and merriment! Such a mosaic would suggest to guests that you enjoyed an excellent raucous dinner party with wine and all the delicious accompaniments! - Bacchus Mosaic from Antioch (325-330 CE) - 3D model by Specterras 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 24123 polygons.
