“L’interno del paese mostra fabbriche assai vecchie sparse per le strette e tortuose viuzze. La più notevole è il palazzo dei Pignatelli. Sebbene non risulti essere stata questa famiglia antica signora del luogo, dubito che questo palazzo appartenesse in antecedenza agli antichi e primi feudatari di Fiumefreddo per la superiorità e importanza, nonché lusso, della sua fabbrica su tutti i fabbricati del luogo […]. Il feudo di Fiumefreddo passò poi in mano dei Gravina di Napoli. Quest’ultimi forse sono stati i fondatori di questo palazzo verso i primi del Cinquecento. Né sarei alieno dal dubitare che ideatore della bella architettura di questo palazzo potrebbe essere stato il d’Agnolo, che per gli stessi Gravina ideò e diresse la fabbrica del loro magnifico palazzo in Napoli verso la fine del Quattrocento”.
