The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

Did a scan of one of our company shirts for a quick project. This is the first time I’ve combined two sides of a soft-body scan - cloth tends to be somewhat floppy. To flip the shirt without messing up the fold pattern, I made a sort of cardboard sandwich I could press together. I also overexposed the shots to improve the scan.
The cleanup wasn’t too bad. Even after deleting points from the platforms from the dense cloud they still made their way into the mesh a little. Ended up taking those out in Max, then smoothing things over in ZBrush. I also used ZBrush for the decimation and unwrap, and was really happy about the results. I like Max’s peel feature, but UV Master in ZBrush goes so much faster and gets rid of all the overlaps even if the result is bent a little.
I also still need to find a faster way to patch up seams. There was one towards the “south” side of the shirt that I had to a 2nd channel unwrap -> bake -> photoshop -> bake to ch1 -> mask into texture approach. IT was hailed as being ‘‘100 years ahead of its time’’ when it opened in 1936 to care for the treatment of people with learning disabilities.
Hidden in a wooded estate, well outside Glasgow’s city boundary, Lennox Castle hospital - built for (pounds) 1m - was chosen for its rural, peaceful and safe location.
Apart from a few who had jobs on neighbouring farms, the 1500 patients catered for at its peak, aged from 10 to 80, lived mainly in their own community, separate from their neighbours in Lennoxtown, with their own workshops, school and recreational facilities.
