Marble 1685-1694 The emperor Claudius condemned the Roman senator Carcina Paetus to death for his involvmenet in a conspiracy. His wife Arria stabbed herself, then passed the dagger to her husband, saying, ‘Paetus, it does not hurt' - a celebrated example of virtue recounted by Latin authors. To the right of Paetus, a cupid sitting astride a dog is a symbol of love and fidelity. This ambitious sculpture group was produced at the French Academy in Rome by the sculptors Jean-Baptiste Théodon then Pierre Lepautre; it was inspired by the great Roman sculptures of the 1650s. The captives, four larger-than-life bronze figures, symbolize the four nations defeated at the time of the Treaty of Nijmegen. Each represents one of the ages of man and a different attitude to captivity. Spain is a smooth-faced young man with streaming hair. His , upright body and heavenward gaze all indicate hope. The Holy Roman Empire is a bearded old man dressed in an ancient tunic. His head is bowed and his body sags in dejected resignation. Holland is young man with virile features and a short beard. His body poised to leap, his shoulder thrust forward in a defiant gesture and his wild expression speak of rebellion. Brandenburg is a mature man dressed like an ancient barbarian.

3D scan of the southern elephant seal, Mirounga leoninae. This specimen is from the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and became part of the collection of the NHM Vienna in 1901. Very few museums own a specimen this large, even fewer have one that is more than 100-years-old!
The southern elephant seal is Number 86 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 34 of the NHM Vienna next to Steller’s sea cow.
