Trying to push my skills up to a pro level. All in all, i think this project turned out very well, though there are a handful of minor faults and mistakes made in the modeling of the gun. It's hard to get every little detail 100% correct when you rely on google images. Modeled in Maya, animated in Maya, textured in Substance Painter. Prompted by the lovely staff here at Sketchfab, I have decided to research a bit more about the pistol this model is based on, and boy was it a fun read!
Fun Fact: It costs over 3000$ today
The design dates from the 1860s, and is attributed to Louis Dolne. The gun was manufactured until the end of the 1800s.
One of the rarest gambler/hide away/ personal defense deringers around. Incorporates a 6mm (22) rimfire revolver, “knuckles” that unfold to provide a grip for the revolver and a 2 1/2” folding dagger. Weapon is 4” long when folded. Expands to 8” when at full length. Marked “Dolne - 6mm” (L. Dolne - Imuur) on frame, folding trigger and exposed springs. Brushed finish, overall excellent. Here’s my latest project, a Smith & Wesson 66-8 .357 Revolver. This has a good amount of parts to it, so to have everything bake out right I had to bake by mesh name. I learned two things - that baking by mesh name is case sensitive, and trying to use an .fbx before it’s fully exported just doesn’t work. It corrupts your exported file. Just so you know.
With the textures, I used a combination of materials and masks to mimic dirt, grime, and soot from repeated use. I had to make about 7 alphas for all the height details.
I had to adjust some materials so it’d read better as metal instead of stone, as well as adjusting the damage information and swapping out some normals that I wasn’t satisfied with. Time to call this model finished for now. My entry for Sketchfab Weekly #3: Heart !
When I saw that Sketchfab is hosting weekly challenges, I immediately knew I had to participate since I’m struggling getting projects done and instead work on them for what feels like centuries.
For the topic “Heart” I was thinking about some sort of “modern” Cupid and decided to create a new tool instead of the classic bow and arrow. For guns I find the design of revolvers very interesting, so I went with that. My version of Cupid is a highschool girl who works as Cupid as a part-time job and uses this (obviously non-lethal) gun to make people fall in love. Because she is quite young, I chose bright blue and pink colors, decorated the grips with doodles and added hearts in various ways.
