This little garden was created primarily for practice; I wanted to create a new environment but keep the scope relatively small. A garden is perfect because in some ways it resembles a little world, with its own creatures, foliage and landscape. My texturing/material skills are not a strength yet so I was keen on exploring what detail I could achieve with using very simple painted textures.
The whole project was mainly created using Blender, with a little bit of Photoshop for painting and post processing.
The HDRI environment texture used was sourced from https://hdrihaven.com/ “nagoya_wall_path”.
At first I was planning to just produce a render from one angle, but later decided it would be nice to show off in Sketchfab. I then baked all textures for import into Sketchfab, it was a busy scene so I had to make some sacrifices in texture quality. First time properly using Substance Painter - Croix De Guerre 1939, given to brave souls who fought along side the allies during WW2.
Some areas aren’t as accurate as I’d like them to be due to having to work around an issue in photoshop (had to mess about with the UV a little, so there’s a tiny bit of weirdness). That said, this has been an important breakthrough in my workflow and I’ve finally entered the realm of PBR.
Whilst I do own (and quite like) Quixel, its shortcomings are mostly performance based, whereas Substance does very well in this case. The thing with Substance is pinpoint accuracy is at a loss along with important things like proper brush scaling on both U and V. I’ve yet to check out the latest version of Substance though. This is a small prop for urban sci-fi scenes. I came up with the idea as a science fiction version of a modern paper newspaper vending machine. Although newspapers vending machines have been being phased out for some time due to the transition to the internet… I thought this concept would work well as something to fill in an urban environment.
The rack was modeled in blender and textured in substance painter. The screen animation uses 16 planes for each frame, cycled through using shape-keys.
