This vestment set once belonged to Bishop James Gillis, the Vicar Apostolic to the Eastern District of Scotland from 1852 to 1864. The flower as a symbol of eternity and rebirth indicates that the man had died by the time that his portrait was made. Who the depicted person is remains unknown.
