These polychromed metopes once decorated the porches of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (c. 460 BCE); the remains are in the Olympia Archaeological Museum and the Louvre. The series depicts the twelve labors of Heracles. The original metopes were sculpted in high relief; the color schemes are based on research and aesthetic judgment. This statue comes from the Forum Boarium in Rome, where it was found during the pontificate of Sixtus IV (1471-1484). The statue likely represented the cult statue whithin the temple dedicated to the Greek hero, and previously thought to be a temple of Vesta (due to its circular form, surrounded by columns). There are significant remains of gilding (gold leaf).
Hercules (Greek: Herakles) holds the Apples of the Hesperides in one hand and his signature club in the other.
The statue is approximately 250 cm tall (~8 ft), displayed atop a tall pedestal, and is slightly reflective due to the gilding, making it difficult to photograph.
