Pretty long and arduous project - especially on the technical side. I tried very hard to make a mesh that’s optimized but still with sufficient triangles to remain pretty. I was aiming for around 30k tris, and while i slightly overshot, it’s still a personal W for me. A lot of learning in this one.
In the end it’s totally worth it to see my fella all grumpy and wobbling in 3D space. There’s really nothing like making something from scratch, from concept to engine, all by yourself. Feels good !

The area where I grew up in Shanghai had a bunch of cheap, delicious, fast-serve sushi stalls which I visited almost weekly. I bought a setup for my microscope to use it as a photogrammetry tool for very small objects. I’m not there yet regarding accuracy, but I am pleased with this first results. The photogrammetry C1 I made by mirroring the half that was completely scanned, and I still miss a lot of details, but the reason for wanting to be able to also make photogrammetry models is that I want to be sure about the overall shape of my models. As you can see, even though most of it is the same, especially the transverse processes (the “wings”) have a slightly different orientation. I need to redo the scan to be sure if I need to remodel the modeled C1.
I added another scan made with agisoft with the same set of photos. The scan is totally different somehow, not only in the details but also in the larger features.
(and yes, I’m a perfectionist..)
Edit: added yet another version with agisoft. Used 514 photos and mirrored one half. It’s getting better, even without image stacking. The microsope probably isn’t good enough to do that 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 76836 polygons.

A watertight rock I created using photogrammetry. Software wouldn’t process entire object as one, so I had to process the top half, then the bottom half, and merge the two together which was a bit of a pain.

This is a 3D scan of a cockroach I bought on etsy. It’s part of a larger project where I combined 3D modeled assets with photogrammetry (see http://whatswrongwithwhite.tumblr.com/image/177884973392 ). I used a lot of custom photo equipment (macro lens, polarization filters, extension tubes and a 3D printed cockroach holder from shapeways). For cleanup I used blender (cleaning up holes, chopping up into body parts, modeling deatils). For the final material design and export Substance Painter did a great job.
