Elmina is first European trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and recognised as the oldest European building south of the Sahara. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1482, taken over by the Dutch in the 17th century and the British in the late 19th century. Elmina Castle and other forts and castles in the area were important links in the trade routes established during the era of maritime exploration, and served the gold trade and the transatlantic slave trade. They are significant historical sites of European-African engagement, as well as the starting point of the African diaspora. In Kameoka city near Kyoto the castle is not there anymore but the walls remains. In fact they have been rebuilt to restore some of the former beauty of this location. I captured 3 walls sections, the interesting thing here is the technique used to build the wall. Instead of well joined and polished stones here huge rocks are pilled up and smaller rocks fill the space between. It was suposedly designed to allow to hear soldiers cllimbing the wall as they would eventally let a small rock fall. This third wall is a low wall before a gate to enter the castle ground. This wall as fewer and big stones taht fit well together. Some stomes are recycled from other building as testify the carving tah tcan be seen in many stomes used in this castle. Oda Nobunaga ordered this Castle contruction as a base for the invasion of Tanba region.
