“The amazing Venus of the Higger Paleolithic”, this is how its discoverers have described the small statuette of more than 23,000 years, sculpted in exceptionally preserved limestone and which has provided valuable testimony about the late Paleolithic society.
Discovered this summer, the Venus, presented this Wednesday, closes a beautiful series of 15 statuettes found in the prehistoric site of Renancourt, in a district southwest of Amiens, excavated since 2014. This stone tool was found in ploughsoil in Kent, England.
Quartzite pebble hammers with cental hourglass perforations date from the Mesolithic (c.8000-4000 cal BC). The perforation on this example was made by pecking and was subsequently ground smooth. A wooden handle woud have been inserted through the hole and that was probably bound in position. Small pecked facets on the leading edges indicate that this tool was used as a hammer; it may also have functioned as a weight on a digging stick.
