Many people are familiar with the art installationin in the Helix Park, adjacent to the Falkirk Wheel - the large Kelpies - at 30 metres high, they are the world’s largest equine sculptures, created by Andy Scott in 2013.
What is less well known is that a mini version of these iconic sculptures, the pre production “maquettes”, some 10 feet high are currently in residence in Ardrishaig at the western end of the Crinnan Canal at the Ardrishaig waterway’s centre. This stone tool was found in ploughsoil in Kent, England.
Quartzite pebble hammers with cental hourglass perforations date from the Mesolithic (c.8000-4000 cal BC). The perforation on this example was made by pecking and was subsequently ground smooth. A wooden handle woud have been inserted through the hole and that was probably bound in position. Small pecked facets on the leading edges indicate that this tool was used as a hammer; it may also have functioned as a weight on a digging stick.
