A capstan was used to hoist a cannon up the slopes of the walls of a fortress. Typically, a 24 pound cannon weights 3000 kg and at least 4 men were needed to get the cannon up the slope. The design of the capstan is taken from “Mémoires d’artillerie" by Surirey de Saint Remy, the French “lieutenant du Grand-Maître d’artillerie de France” and adapted for technical inconsistencies. A cannon was made in such a way that it was nearly in balance around the wheel axis. This means that one man could lift a cannon and attach it to a horse-drawn front carriage to transport the cannon. As a 24-pound cannon weighs about 3000 kg, this works well on flat terrain. Getting the cannon up the walls was done with a capstan and a lot of man-power.
