The Tower of Hercules (Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, it was known as the “Farum Brigantium". The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek Φάρος Pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The structure stands 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. It was built in the 1st century and renovated in 1791, and is the oldest lighthouse of the world. In ancient Greek mythology Ethiopian princess Andromeda was bound to a rock amid the waves of the Red sea. Why? Her mother, Cassiopeia boasted that Andromeda is far more beautifull then all the nymphs of the sea! This angered the god Poseidon who sent a monster creature, Cetus (Ketos) to torment people of ancient Ethiopia. The beautifull princess was to be eaten by a sea moster to soothe the anger of the god! In the very last moment a hero - Perseus flew (on Hermes winged sandals) and saved the princess from the vile beast.
Here is where the official myth ends and my own artistic interpretation of it begins. When researching Andromeda, I could only find white, pale damsels in distress. Angered by this I wanted to depict Andromeda as a true African princess. I disliked the concept of a helpless damsel and decided to give her some character. I also wanted to portray Ketos as a bewildered sea dragon not an angry whale.
