  EMD SW1200 Locomotive 3D Model 2024-05-12
Low poly game ready model of a locomotive designed as a mashup of various EMD SW1200 variants. Painted in a Burlington Route livery (some liberties taken). This is actually a remake of a model that was featured in one of the levels I created for No More Room in Hell, quirky details preserved. At the time I was not able to actually create 3d models properly and found a way to circumvent it by using Propper - an addon that allows one to create a Source Engine model using only the Hammer Editor. I thought this would be a great subject to test my abilities since there is an easy point of comparison with the original model. In the 1950s, LeTourneau Inc. developed several overland trains, essentially oversized semi-trailer trucks that could travel over almost any terrain. Their intention was to be able to handle logistics needs without being dependent on local road or rail systems, allowing them to operate in back-country areas. The US Army had three experimental units built, the largest reaching almost 600 feet (183 m) long, which holds the record for the longest off-road vehicle. The Mark II had a much larger six-wheeled cab that was over 30 feet (9.1 m). The turbine engine was much smaller than the diesel it replaced, allowing the interior to support a crew of six with sleeping quarters, toilets and a galley. It was even equipped with a radar. This is an educational model- it has not been fully optimized for real-time applications. For some history, Central Pacific #55 was the first locomotive built from scratch by the Central Pacific in Sacramento, CA, based on the rebuilt C.P. #173, which had been reconstructed from the ground-up following a bad wreck near Alameda. Outshopped in June of 1873, the shop would build 12 of these locomotives in total, and they would pave the way for CP’s innovative designs. One of these 12 locomotives still survives today, V&TRR #18, “Dayton”, residing at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in display condition. I had a job where I had to make a replica of the Heisler Locomotive train from back in the 1920’s, which was an innovative design for a train engine at the time. The engine was designed in a way to have the two cylinders both at a 45 degree angle from each other. This train was to be built in Blender, and then transferred to the Unity game engine. I built the train in a low polygon fashion (50,000+ triangles), baked the bump map, and also rigged the wheels and transmission, to rotate with only the action of one bone. For the materials, I created a material ID for the train, and pulled the model into Substance Painter to keep all of the textures in one full map, so that when you import the train to Unity, you will only have to worry about one batch of maps, rather than dealing with many more.
