The Atlantic ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) is a species of decapod crustacean in the family Ocypodidae. Characteristics of the genus include one claw larger than the other. The typical life expectancy of O. quadrata is approximately 3 years.
Its scientific name derives from the Greek root ocy (‘fast’) and ποδός (podos, ‘foot’), in reference to the speed of the animal, unparalleled among crustaceans, which when it escapes from its predators reaches, according to the most optimists, up to 20 km/h. After a long time of sitting unfinished, here he is! This guy has been collecting dust in my computer files for a while. He started as a class project, but I never felt I did the original concept art justice after the one week I had to work on him, so I decided to resculpt and finally get around to texturing him. I had to fix a lot of stuff as well as optimize him for him to be game ready! I’m very happy with how this guy turned out, and it was a good piece to practice all aspects of the pipeline since I did a lot of back and forth changes. I decided to go a bit more realistic and dirty than in the concept by adding grime, barnacles, mold, etc.
Sculpted in ZBrush, Modeled/Retopo/UVs in Maya, textured and rendered in Substance Painter with Iray
