  Glyptonotus antarcticus 3D Model 2023-11-05
Glyptonotus antarcticus Eights, 1852 is a benthic marine isopod crustacean in the suborder Valvifera. This relatively large isopod is found in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. This 3D model is from a specimen (MNA-02712) collected in the framework of the National Science Foundation (NSF) ICEFISH 2004 cruise.

G. antarcticus is a powerful carnivore and scavenger, an ecological role that brings this species to be caught in baited traps. It capable of active swimming, which is performed in an upside-down position.

Eggs and young are brooded for more than one year in the female's marsupium formed by a series of specisalized appendages (oostegites). Here the eggs are nourished by a maternal secretion.

Respiratory chamber is located ventrally to the pleotelson, consisting in two leaf-like uropods, that ventilate the animal; also pleopods, thin and flattened, help the respiratory processes with continuous movements 3d model

Inventory number: EAΜ 419 Roman Period 2nd cent. AD It was found in the Theatre of Dionysos in 1870 or 1876. At the back, the biggest part of his hair has been restored. It depicts a young man with idealised features, rich and unruly hair which fall on the shoulders, and a short beard. His head emerges out of a flower’s calyx as the two acanthus leaves still preserved on his nape show. The flower as a symbol of eternity and rebirth indicates that the man had died by the time that his portrait was made. Who the depicted person is remains unknown. Perhaps he was a philhellene ruler or the descendant of a royal family who had more of a spiritual than political connection to Athens. Some researchers identify him with Sauromates II, king of the Cimmerian Bosporus, others with Rhoemetalkes whereas there are scholars who think it is Herodes Atticus or the emperor Gallienus. “The name Triceratops means three-horned face, referring to the one small and two large horns on the skull, which can be seen on the cast on display in the Museum. Triceratops was 7.3 metres long, and weighed more than 6 tonnes. It was a herbivore, and its jaws were equipped with a constantly replaced battery of teeth specially adapted for cutting up tough plant material. The horn and frill of Triceratops have attracted much speculation, but it is likely that they were used for display and fighting to maintain social dominance, and to defend territory and mates. Functional analysis suggests that Triceratops locked horns in pushing and twisting fights between individuals, the massive frill at the back of the skull acting as a shield to deflect the horns of opponents and protect the vulnerable neck and shoulder muscles.”~http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/learning/htmls/dinosaur.htm - Triceratops Horridus, Nat.
