A model of Caesarean legionnary, those commanded by Julius Caesar during his gaulish war… And the final stage of the evolution of legionnaires before the breastplates as we imagine them today. Theses equipments were in use approximately from the reforms of Marius in 107 BC -> to the beginning of the Principate around 27 AD. After the dissolution of ranks in the army (Hastati, Velites, Principes, Triarii) and the opening of recruitment to larger social classes along with the provision of equipment at the Consul's expense… All of this led to an overall standardization within the ranks of the roman army. The sundial is designed 1924 by artist Roman Haavamäe on the Haapsalu, Estonia seaside Promenade. The face of the dial depicts the life of man – starting with a child and ending with an old man supported by a cane. It shows the local sun time, which is about 90 slower than daylight savings time.
Sundial was destroyed in 1945 but sculptor restored it 1960.
