This highly detailed real-scale model is composed by a main pole acompanied by its classics bolt steps and manhole steps spread along it, plus cross-arms, mounting bands and supports. Model portrays a standard pole distribution with Supply Space and Comunications Space. First one is composed by detailed transformers with connectors, cover buckles & bolts, mounting supports and secondary terminals; there are also rows of large and medium porcelain insulators & fuses with its ironworks as supports, bolts and nuts. This tower has long since been abandoned by its former occupants and lies in ruin. I used the Warhammer 40k models Witchfate Tor and Dreadstone Blight as my main references for the design of the tower. I started this model in Maya, blocking in all the shapes. Then I moved to ZBrush and sculpted in detail. In hindsight, I wish I had made this a more modular blockout because I ran out of time sculpting each individual piece. After I had sculpted enough to finish baking my Game Res mesh I moved to texturing in Substance Painter. It took a bit of time to get my UV’s laid out well enough to have the resolution I wanted, and I ended up going from 1 texture set to 2 in order to achieve the level of detail I wanted. My goal was to create my own concept of the design that was more compact, but also make it functional (animated) and bake it to a game ready asset/prefab, which the video does not cover (it only bakes a static higher poly mesh that is not optimized).
This was a fun project and while i hoped to complete it in roughly the same amount of time as the video shows, it took a bit longer solidifying my own design, building the low/high poly mesh, and making it functional. This took me about a week of spare time tinkering to make (the tutorial only took 90+ minutes).
