This one started out as a test on virtual horizon on Sketchfab, and as a challenge to test out a somewhat convincing ocean animation with geometry. Note that I am not satisfied with the ocean movement and am still working on it, but I think the sense of distance (8000m) and atmosphere works decently. As an artwork the thoughts behind is simply to embrace nature, and to accept the notion that the absolute freedom is absolute loneliness. This is another personal project I completed as part of a series of environment pieces I’ve been aiming to interconnect in a game engine. I wanted to focus on modular asset development to prep for larger projects in the future. I also got to try out some excellent terrain brushes that I recently purchased for ZBrush. I went for an aged Lighthouse as it appealed more to my style/sensibilities (clean is boring). Made this floating island with a lighthouse in 5 days trying to be done by the end of the week. And I gotta say, this was a marathon. Were a lot of troubles with baking, making fine details. If I had more time I would probably did separate bakes, but not this time. So, about the model: it’s a handpainted lowpoly with baked map from a highpoly. Triangles count: 27,5K. I was going with anime style (Miyazaki movies) and for reference I used artworks of Jim Shore (“Benatrex - Shorelights”), you’ll notice the lighthouse that I recreated.

The lighthouse of the City of Chania on the island of Crete is the most recognizable part of the city and one of the oldest in the world. It is 21m high build on stone base and is located at the entrance of the Ancient harbour’s pier of The Fortress of Firkas.
Build by the Venetians at the end of the 16th century it was reconstructed by the Egyptians in the form of minaret during the Egyptian period around 1830-40.
During the Turkish Occupation, the lighthouse was abandoned.
The current lighthouse tower is mounted on a trapezoidal base which holds since the Venetian Era.
The tower is divided in three parts: an octagonal lower part, the middle part with sixteen sides, and the third part which is circular.
The lighthouse was leaning badly due to bombings during WWII and earthquakes but was renovated in 2005-6.
