The Monastery of St. Aberkios is situated on the seashore a short distance east of the village of Elegmi (modern Kurşunlu) on the Bithynian coast on the Propontis (the Sea of Marmara). The relic was brought to Armenia by St. Hripsime in the late 3rd century AD, and since then has remained a symbol of protection for the Armenian people.
