The lighthouse of the City of Chania on the island of Crete is the most recognizable part of the city and one of the oldest in the world. It is 21m high build on stone base and is located at the entrance of the Ancient harbour's pier of The Fortress of Firkas. Build by the Venetians at the end of the 16th century it was reconstructed by the Egyptians in the form of minaret during the Egyptian period around 1830-40. During the Turkish Occupation, the lighthouse was abandoned. The current lighthouse tower is mounted on a trapezoidal base which holds since the Venetian Era. The tower is divided in three parts: an octagonal lower part, the middle part with sixteen sides, and the third part which is circular. The lighthouse was leaning badly due to bombings during WWII and earthquakes but was renovated in 2005-6. This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently.
The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished.

If there is one essential monument in Vigo, that’s the monument to Jules Verne (42.241217, -8.722885). The great writer devoted a chapter to “The Bay of Vigo” in one of his most famous books, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, fuelling the legend of the Rande treasure with the adventures of its popular main character, Captain Nemo, and his famous Nautilus. Jules Verne even came to visit the city some time after writing the novel, so in his honour and on the centenary of his death (2005), the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Pontevedra commissioned this bronze sculpture from local artist José Molares and donated it to the city. Since then, the writer has been sitting on the tentacles of a giant squid in the Avenidas, next to the Montero Ríos gardens.

This beautiful water well is situated right next to the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, yet it is often overlooked by tourists.
The Gothic iron work for the well dates to 1490 and was crafted by Quinten Matsijs, who is better known as a Master Painter and founder of the Antwerp School.
The story goes that when the young Matsijs first came to Antwerp as a blacksmith, he fell in love with Catherina Heyns, the daughter of a fine arts painter. However, her father was of the opinion that a smith was beneath the standing of his daughter. Matsijs therefore retrained as a painter (eventually becoming one of the best known painters of his day) and thus won approval to marry Catherina.
The Neo-Gothic well itself, made by the city’s master builder Gustave Royers in 1900, bears reference to this tale. The inscription reads: “The iron work for this well was wrought by Quinten Matsijs. Love made of the smith a painter.”
