Many people are familiar with the art installationin in the Helix Park, adjacent to the Falkirk Wheel - the large Kelpies - at 30 metres high, they are the world's largest equine sculptures, created by Andy Scott in 2013. What is less well known is that a mini version of these iconic sculptures, the pre production “maquettes", some 10 feet high are currently in residence in Ardrishaig at the western end of the Crinnan Canal at the Ardrishaig waterway's centre. They have been sited there at since 2019 having cantered down from their earlier site in Edinburgh. I’ve been watching these mushrooms grow in a little patch of forest near my house and the #AgisoftNatureChallenge provided a good incentive to see how well they’d scan. I was a bit surprised at how some of the details like the ant colony entrance turned out. All in all, it was a good experience trying to capture something that I might not have attempted otherwise.
Model made from 132 12MB images taken with a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and processed in Metashape using “High” quality settings.

Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD.
This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall.
The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland.
