A trilby is a narrow-brimmed type of hat. The trilby was once viewed as the rich man’s favored hat; it is sometimes called the “brown trilby” in Britain and was frequently seen at the horse races. The traditional London hat company Lock and Co. describes the trilby as having a “shorter brim which is angled down at the front and slightly turned up at the back” compared to the fedora’s “wider brim which is more level”. The trilby also has a slightly shorter crown than a typical fedora design. The hat’s name derives from the stage adaptation of George du Maurier’s 1894 novel Trilby. This is a model of an 18th Century English hanger sword that I made originally using RealityCapture. I’ve returned to my original model, retopologized it, reworked the textures, and cleaned it up in some spots that needed manual attention. I’m quite happy with the result, and look forward to incorporating retopology in to my workflow more frequently.
The blade is in excellent condition, and the hilt is a finely crafted work of silver. Both maintain an almost mirrored finish, presenting an enormous challenge to capture through photogrammetry. The initial model turned out okay considering the conditions, but several parts of the model had issues with continuity of the normals due to the nature of the more random topology of the model RealityCapture produced. This results in razor edges looking rough and jagged, as well as the smooth mirrored surfaces appearing lumpy and unfinished.
