For this project I took the challenge of taking something from animation and bringing it into the 3D world of game engines. This project was really about utilizing and cross referencing multiple sources of reference when only limited amounts of information are shown about the subject matter. This brought the truck to life as a rig-ready game model in UE4 along with a sweeping stylized landscape. Turns out it’s not that hard to achieve an authentic handpainted look. I’ve done a ton of researching and studying, and I’ve found a style that seems to really work when creating 3d ghibli-style scenes using Substance Painter. These techniques can be applied to basically any project. I’m really looking forward to improving the process later on this month. This is going to be an ongoing series where I explore different texturing techniques you can use to achieve an anime aesthetic, so make sure to sign up before the price goes up!
