Most of the portals I have seen are either stone or metal, so I wanted to create a stylised wooden, rustic Portal with some wood paint dye that has faded edges. Something that you may find in a medieval fantasy or the witcher.
I used blender to create the model and substance painter to texture it.
Most of the model is texture painted, aside from the painting that I stencilled around the base and there are some wood fibres that are procedurally generated. I created a particle system in blender and use a vertex force to get them to rotate. Blender doesn’t have a built in way to export animated particles, so I found a script online that I ran in Blender to convert the particle system to an animated mesh.

Based on a total of 228 x 12MP photos, acquired in the field with a smartphone camera in September 2020.

This is my second assignment of Second Year Game Art @ De Montfort University. The brief was to create a ‘Bounty Hunter’ character bust with a budget of 18,000 tris. The aim was to create a semi-realistic look by using Zbrush for a more detailed mesh, then retop in 3DS Max and texuture in Substance Painter/Designer. Since our deadline isn’t until the end of the year, I haven’t rendered in UE4 for the hand-in just yet and have used Marmoset Toolbag. I really enjoyed this project - it was a pretty big learning curve for just a few weeks project but I learned a lot of new techniques and had fun bringing my own bounty hunter concept to life! My inspiration was the Witcher 3, but with a bit of stylisation mixed in. This is the main character, a norse folk who got murdered by christian crusaders, but the Gods gave him a second chance to take revenge from them!
This is the nearly end result of a workflow I went almost alone. From reference material research, rising up some sketchy concepts, to a rich story reflecting design. The 3D model came from an endless iteration witch alowed me to go back and forth until what you see now.
Backing and textures are full of errors, even UV maps are partially opened. But Im not working on it for now, so decided to share it as it is.
