A little side project I have been working on just in time for Halloween! A great horned owl captured and recreated in RealityCapture. Post-processing and reconstruction done in Blender, Photoshop, and MeshLab. There was actually a ton of detail that was contained in the original model that unfortunately does not really come through when decimated. I may do a higher res bust of the head in the future, just to see what kind of detail I can accomplish 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 92750 polygons.

In photogrammetry there’s balance between large f-stop and shutter speed. I think the long shutter speed blew out the ends of the feathers. Well, that and they’re translucent....
Feathers are tough.

3D scan of an Arrau turtle (Podocnemis expansa). This specimen is an example for early taxidermy. This turtle was caught in 1832 on the banks of the Rio Solimões during an Austrian expedition in Brazil. It came to the NHM Vienna in 1834 and is one of a few found specimens of this rare species. Arrau turtles live in the wetland areas of South America and are among the largest freshwater turtles in the world.
The Arrau turtle is Number 73 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 28 of the NHM Vienna.
