This cope and hood dates from around 1860 and features the four Evangelists’ emblems and their names in Latin: St Matthew (the Winged Man), St. Mark (the Winged Lion); the Luke (the Winged Ox); St John (the Eagle). The sacred monogram of Jesus ‘I.H.S.’ is in the centre of a cross, with stylised flowers and pomegranites.
The hood features Christ and St. John the Beloved, surmounted by the Sacred Heart with Flames, Crown of Thorns, Anchor and Cross. The techniques used are needle painting in coloured silks and gold crouching, trimmed with a heavy gold bullion fringe. A campaign hat, sometimes called campaign cover, is a broad-brimmed felt or straw hat, with a high crown, pinched symmetrically at the four corners. The hat is most commonly worn as part of a uniform, by such organizations as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the New Zealand Army, United States Park Rangers, and Scouts. The campaign hat is occasionally referred to as a Stetson, derived from its origin in the company’s Boss of the Plains model in the late 19th century. It should not be confused with the Stetson style cowboy hat, which has a different brim and crease, nor a slouch hat.
