Rune stones
The rune stones of the Viking period were erected in memory of the dead – mostly powerful people – and their honourable deeds. They were intended to be visible and were painted in bright colours. The stones often stood near roads or bridges, where many people passed by. They were not necessarily placed at the burial of the person they commemorated.
The rune stones bring us very close to the Vikings. Their inscriptions feature the names of the people who lived and died at this time. They also provide information about the travels, great achievements and sad fates of these individuals.
Rune stones are by and large only found in Scandinavia. Around 250 rune stones are known from Viking Age Denmark. Most of the Scandinavian examples are from Sweden, where there are over 3000 inscriptions.

The ancient city, covering an area greater than 16 sq km (6.2 sq mi), is the largest known ancient Maya city-complex dating to the Classic period. It is estimated to have had a peak population of 100,000 to 200,000 with an urban density of 600 to 700 people per square kilometer. During the Classic Maya period from 200 to 850 CE, Tikal flourished, becoming the preeminent political, economic, and military power in the region. At least 33 rulers oversaw the construction of numerous monuments, many of which remain to be uncovered. In addition to its large monumental temples, the site is renowned for its carved inscriptions and exceptional multicolored ceramics.

Cuneiform is the world’s oldest known written language developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia in the 4th millennium BC. The inscriptions were made with reed styluses to impress some 900 different logographic, syllabic and taxographic signs into moist clay tablets.
The text dates from the third dynasty of Ur (Ur III, c. 2100-2000 BC). The original text that was impressed on the tablet has, for the most part, been rendered illegible by a seal that was stamped over the surface.
The seal appears to have belonged to Shara-bazige, a scribe who was employed by Ur-Lisi, governor of Umma, a city-state in southern Mesopotamia and a key center during the Ur III period. The relics, known as the Mjölnir (Mjöllnir) amulets, appear to depict hammers, which historians have linked to the Norse god Thor . However, this could not be concluded with certainty for a very long time as their shapes are not conclusive and none of them contained inscriptions revealing their identity.
But things changed in 2014, when one amulet was found with a clear indication describing what the pendant is trying to depict. That artifact was found in Købelev, on the Danish island of Lolland . It was the first of its kind to be discovered with an inscription.
The runic text reads “Hmar x is”, which translates to “this is a hammer”. Cast in bronze, and likely plated with silver, tin, and gold, the 1,100-year-old pendant shows that Thor’s myth deeply influenced Viking jewelry .
