The DDA40X is a 6,600 horsepower (4.92 megawatts) D-D diesel-electric built by the General Motors EMD division of La Grange, Illinois for the Union Pacific Railroad. The Baldwin DT-6-6-2000 (Also referred to as the Baldwin DT6-6-2000) was a twin-engined diesel-electric transfer locomotive, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works
A single prototype using a pair of 8 cylinder nominally aspirated 608NA prime movers (engines) was built in 1946 for the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway. Forty-five further locomotives were built using 6-cylinder turbocharged 606SC prime movers during 1948–1950.
The DT-6-6-2000 was most popular with the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway, who purchased 27 of the 46 locomotives produced. Between 1956 and 1962, all but two of these locomotives underwent a significant rebuilding program. Several locomotives were rebuilt by the EJ&E at their Joliet shops and equipped with 1200hp Baldwin 606A engines. Kharkovchanka , code name: Manufacture 404S, is a model of Antarctic off-road vehicle. Based on the AT-T tractor platform (itself based on the T-54 tank). In December 1959 two of them (“21” and “23”) were delivered to Antarctica and reached the South Pole. The massive off-road snow vehicle had a total of a small galley, toilet, oven, and eight beds. Three Kharkovchankas were built in 1958, and shipped to Antarctica. They traversed from the ocean coast to the existing Soviet Vostok Station in February 1959. Two of these, and a third AT-T tractor, left Vostok station for the geographic South Pole in early December 1959, arriving at the pole on 26 December 1959, and surprising the US crew that had been airlifted into the Amundsen–Scott Station the previous summer.
