The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 2 was a large ocean going longship, a war vessel probably known as a Skeid - the type of vessel also known in the sagas as “dragon ships”. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built in Ireland around the 1040’s CE, the furthest away of all the Skuldelev ships. This digital recreation is based on the ‘The Sea Stallion from Glendalough’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum.

Ce tant, a fait partie de l’armement du Joshua, le bateau du célèbre navigateur Bernard Moitessier, « le vagabond des mers du Sud ». Instrument inventé pour la navigation marine, il permet de se localiser en mesurant l’angle entre l’horizon et un objet lointain (clocher, montagne) ou un astre (Soleil, Lune ou étoile).
Il est composé d’une petite lunette, pour viser l’horizon, de deux miroirs (qui projettent l’image de l’objet visé), d’un bras mobile et d’un arc de cercle gradué sur lequel on lit l’angle formé entre l’objet visé et l’horizon. L’angle d’ouverture est de 60°, d’où le nom de l’instrument.

Remake of one of the film sets from the 1966 science fiction movie “Fantastic Voyage”. The film is about a submarine crew who shrink to microscopic size and venture into the body of an injured scientist to repair the damage to his brain.
The submarine featured in the film, the “Proteus U-91035”, is a nuclear-powered Navy vessel, originally built to study the deep-sea spawning habits of fish. The particular scene, depicted in this model, takes place inside the CMDF headquarters, where (in the film) the Proteus is introduced to the viewer for the first time.
The novel “Fantastic Voyage” was written by Isaac Asimov. The Proteus was designed by Harper Goff, who also created the Nautilus for the movie ‘20.000 Leagues Under the Sea’.
