I was excited to discover in my research on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia (ca. 460 BCE) that the University of Heidelberg had made available online the published findings of the German excavations that began in 1875 (https://goo.gl/eyPAo9). In Volume 3, I found a photograph of the reconstructed east pediment sculptures (https://goo.gl/qLsfp3), which inspired me to paint it (since Greek statues were polychromed) and create a displacement map. “Pausanias…identifies the subject of the East Pediment as the chariot race between Oenomaos, King of Pisa, and Pelops, a suitor of Oenomaos' daughter Hippodameia. He adds that the race has not yet begun. The quietness of the scene suggests that the specific event is the taking of the oath by the contestants before the race, watched over by Zeus…in the center of the pediment." The remains are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. These polychromed metopes once decorated the porches of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (c. 460 BCE); the remains are in the Olympia Archaeological Museum and the Louvre. The series depicts the twelve labors of Heracles. The original metopes were sculpted in high relief; the color schemes are based on research and aesthetic judgment.
The labors are presented in this sequence.

“The choice of Herakles for the sculptural decoration of a temple dedicated to Zeus, especially at Olympia, is understandable. He is not only a son of Zeus and great- grandson of Pelops but the preeminent athlete and founder of the Olympic Games.”

CULTURAL ARTIFACT
“The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was an ancient Greek temple in Olympia, Greece, dedicated to the god Zeus. . . . Construction of the temple began around 470 BC and was probably completed by 457 BC. The architect was Libon of Elis, who worked in the Doric style. . . . The temple housed the renowned statue of Zeus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. . . . In AD 426, Theodosius II ordered the destruction of the sanctuary. Earthquakes in 522 and 551 devastated the ruins and left the Temple of Zeus partially buried.”
