Unusual for its use of a red, rather than maroon, background, this chhod commemorates the entrance of a high-ranking monk into a Mumbai-based Jain community. Commissioned in recognition of a lifetime of devotional fasts undertaken by a resident of Rohida, Rajasthan, the chhod references the eight divine attributes or manifestations (shri ashta pratiharya) that symbolize a Jina’s holy presence, and his or her ability to communicate wisdom to audiences.
