This cope forms part of a High Mass set that would be used on special occasions. The gold and silver embroidery is particularly outstanding in this example and has been worked over card to achieve a raised effect. The set was gifted to the museum by St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen and dates from 1860 – 1870 which was the period when St Mary’s became the Cathedral. The stone stands 2.1metres high, it is decorated with over forty cup marks spread over three sides of the stone.

This vestment set once belonged to Bishop James Gillis, the Vicar Apostolic to the Eastern District of Scotland from 1852 to 1864.
The chasuble is French and probably dates from the nineteenth century. Called a ‘fiddle back’ because of its shape, it is made of cloth of gold and lavishly embroidered with roses and lilies as symbols of Our Lady. The central design is worked mostly in bullions and depicts the Lamb of God on the Book With Seven Seals.
