A traditional hut of the Luo people. A typical homestead consisted of several huts, including one for the husband and separate huts for each wife or sons.
This specific hut is large and spacious, of a grandeur typically only enjoyed by the first wife of an established family. That said, individual taste, style, availability of material, and general economic means resulted in great diversity among the greater Luo community as regards the small details. Still, this hut can be seen as the most archetypal appearance, with differences in size or trim keeping to the same general design. Round huts like this one can still be seen at museums or cultural heritage sites across Kenya, and square-walled versions of similar design are common to this day in rural areas of the Luo Nyanza region.
