The alewife has been brewing ale for the household as they prepare for Sir Eustace and Lady Agnes’s return to Caerlaverock. Her ale is made using barley she bought from the monks at Sweetheart Abbey. She talks about Sweetheart and Lady Devorgilla and eludes to how it was named. The alewife would brew and sell ale to the community. The quality of water at the time was so poor that it meant that ale was a safer bet to drink. As the ale went sour very quickly, the alewife would be continually brewing fresh batches to keep her customers happy. This meant that it was a way for women to add additional income to a household. On January 18th 1935, Clark Hopkins, the field director at Dura-Europos, found three painted shields stacked on top of each other during an excavation. The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible.
The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J. Gute’s watercolor painting, “Wooden Shield Painted with Scenes from the Trojan War”. The mason is in the process of repairing the rear wall of the castle. He’s very industrious and talks about fixing up the castle and recovering the lost stone from the moat. Gargoyles on the castle were carved by the mason and he’s very proud of his work.
The medieval stonemason was a highly skilled craftsman. He served a seven year apprenticeship to learn his craft. Once a fully fledged stonemason, his skills were always in high demand.

The old castle was his preferred hiding place for Sir Eustace’s valuables. Once he has recovered the gold, he’s going to spend some of it on luxuries to make the castle comfortable.
The chamberlain looked after the lord. Similar to the lady in waiting, he would assist the lord with dressing and making sure that he was comfortable. He might also have responsibility for the livery of the lord’s knights, making sure that the lord’s coat of arms was showing. He would also look after the castle finances.
