In the mid-60’s, VTOL in all its forms was all the rage. In 1965, Lockheed answered a US Army Request For Proposals with the CL-945 concept, a stowed-rotor helicopter design. At low speeds and hover, it would operate as a helicopter; at higher speeds, aircraft-style propulsion systems would power it forward; and at much higher speeds than helicopters normally attain, the rotors would stop rotating and would fold back and be stowed for minimum drag. This UAV has 4 rotors/motors but 3 ducts. For long distance forward flight I feel 3 ducts and four motors is the most low profile design, thus efficient. Two of the forward motors are used for forward flight, but all 3 for vertical take off and landing. 1 cowling at the rear contains 2 props and 2 motors creating contra rotational propeller movement. Ducted fans aren’t widely used although now technology is catching up and allows for the total thrust of these motors to be 43kg. The use of removable 6s Lithium Polymer battery pods on either side of the unit allows for the power required. The total weight snips just under 25kg which includes the 6kg payload....phew. The frame has to be made from Carbon Fibre not GRP due to weight restrictions. A sci-fi holographic computer I made that is loosely based off the IBM 5100. Originally created for Second Life, shown here in Metalness PBR. Textured in Quixel Suite and Photoshop, modeled in Blender with the HardOps plugin.
The hologram is static for now, it normally has an animation (in other engines) but I am still trying to figure out a good way to have both a smooth interpolated rotation of the rings on the bottom and a hard transition of frames on the main screen (only way I can currently think of is to use the frame-by-frame method here but that would require way too much mesh data for smooth rotation).
