This project was probably one of the more complex models I’ve done. I first worked on the handle of the saber first since that’s where all the detail resides. Throughout the modeling process, I would always forget to model a certain component after laying out UVs and textures, so I will have to go back and model it in. Inspired by Adam Savage’s Tested video on making lukes saber hilt, I started working on a lightsaber animation. With today being the day it is, it seemed fiting to release the key prop :D
Mostly built and animated (check youtube soon-ish) while waiting for remote Mandolorian watch-parties to start.
The dimmensions and details are accurate to most of the real props used. They used a lot of very different props, from painted rubber tubes to complex close up models, so I took the best references for the details I could get for each detail. The animation is set mid-battle and post-ROTJ so it has a bit more wear and damage.

I saw this beautiful sword design by Moniek Schilder here on Artstation and felt immediately drawn to it. I knew I wanted to try a modeling a weapon while still exploring a stylized texturing technique. I hope I did Moniek’s design justice!
There are multiple things I’m pleased with on this project and multiple things I hope to resolve better in the future. One thing I’m particularly proud of is the damaged portion of the flat part of the blade, which I actually “painted” the normals for in Substance Painter! My dear friend Weston (https://www.artstation.com/westontjones) suggested I try that when I realized I forgot to sculpt the damage in Zbrush. Something I hope to learn from is the lighting issue on the handle, which is related to how I UV’d this piece. Overall, I am pleased with my growth in the past two projects!
