The mušḫuššu (𒈲𒄭𒄊; formerly also read as sirrušu or sirrush) or mushkhushshu (pronounced [muʃxuʃʃu] or [musxussu]), is a creature from ancient Mesopotamian mythology. A mythological hybrid, it is a scaly animal with hind legs resembling the talons of an eagle, lion-like forelimbs, a long neck and tail, a horned head, a snake-like tongue, and a crest. The mušḫuššu most famously appears on the reconstructed Ishtar Gate of the city of Babylon, dating to the sixth century BCE. The form mušḫuššu is the Akkadian nominative of Sumerian: 𒈲𒄭𒄊 MUŠ.ḪUS, ‘reddish snake', sometimes also translated as ‘fierce snake'.[2] One author,[3] possibly following others, translates it as ‘splendor serpent' (𒈲 MUŠ is the Sumerian term for ‘serpent'). This cope and hood dates from around 1860 and features the four Evangelists’ emblems and their names in Latin: St Matthew (the Winged Man), St. Mark (the Winged Lion); the Luke (the Winged Ox); St John (the Eagle). The sacred monogram of Jesus ‘I.H.S.’ is in the centre of a cross, with stylised flowers and pomegranites.
The hood features Christ and St. John the Beloved, surmounted by the Sacred Heart with Flames, Crown of Thorns, Anchor and Cross. The techniques used are needle painting in coloured silks and gold crouching, trimmed with a heavy gold bullion fringe. Vasa was a Swedish warship that capsized and sank off Beckholmen in Stockholm’s inlet on its maiden voyage, August 10, 1628. After some early unsuccessful attempts to rescue her in the 17th century, Vaasa was largely forgotten.
The ship’s approximate position remained known until the middle of the 19th century, but no serious attempts were made to salvage it. In 1956, the amateur researcher and engineer Anders Franzén, together with the diver Per Edvin Fälting, succeeded in re-establishing Vaasa’s exact position and after several years of marine archeological excavations and preparations, Vasa was lifted above the water surface on April 24, 1961.
Since 1990 the ship is included in a permanent exhibition in Stockholm. Until 1988, the wreck was stored in Wasavarvet, a temporary building that, in addition to being a combined conservation room, was allowed to function as a temporary museum. This is work in progress. This building is located in Tbilisi at the top of the Digomi Hills. It used to be a water tank, but in the late 1980s the tank was remodeled and there were plans to open an archaeology museum in it. Unfortunately, the museum was never opened. The building has stood empty and semi-abandoned ever since.

A plaque made of baked straw-tempered clay featuring a winged Babylonian goddess. It was found in southern Iraq and brought to the British Museum (BM) in 1933. It was named the “Burney Relief” after its owner, the London antique dealer Sidney Burney. Authenticity was in doubt for many years but thermoluminescence tests confirm the plaque was made between 1765 and 45 BC, thus slotted into the Old Babylonian period 1800–1750 BC. Plaque was then purchased by the BM in 2003.
There is a great debate about who is depicted as the plaque was renamed “the Queen of the Night”. For years argued to be baby-stealing demon Lilitu, but now Ishtar is now the accepted interpretation.

Cuneiform is the world’s oldest known written language developed by the ancient Sumerians of Mesopotamia in the 4th millennium BC. The inscriptions were made with reed styluses to impress some 900 different logographic, syllabic and taxographic signs into moist clay tablets.
The text dates from the third dynasty of Ur (Ur III, c. 2100-2000 BC). The original text that was impressed on the tablet has, for the most part, been rendered illegible by a seal that was stamped over the surface.
The seal appears to have belonged to Shara-bazige, a scribe who was employed by Ur-Lisi, governor of Umma, a city-state in southern Mesopotamia and a key center during the Ur III period. The Queen of the Night is a Mesopotamian terracotta plaque in high relief of the Isin-Larsa- or Old-Babylonian period, depicting a winged, , goddess-like figure with bird’s talons, flanked by owls, and perched upon two lions.
The relief is displayed in the British Museum in London, which has dated it between 1800 and 1750 BCE. It originates from southern Mesopotamia, but the exact find-site is unknown. Apart from its distinctive iconography, the piece is noted for its high relief and relatively large size, which suggest that it was used as a cult relief, making it a very rare survival from the period. However, whether it represents Lilitu, Inanna/Ishtar, or Ereshkigal is under debate.
