Kako ova dva parametra nisu jednaka, jedno se ne može transformisati u drugo bez distorzije (iskrivljenja), što znači da od lopte, bez razvlačenja ili seckanja, ne možete dobiti ravan, baš kao i što od papira ne možete dobiti loptu bez preklapanja i gužvanja. Dimaksion mape (Dymaxion map) jedan su od najboljih primera mape sa malo distorzije. Zemlja se projektuje na ikosoedar, pravilno geometrijsko telo sa 20 stranica, koji se potom razlaže u mrežu.
