The most unique proposal in the AAFSS competition came from the San Diego division of Convair. The Model 49 did not fit the normal mold for either an airplane or a helicopter, and represented something entirely new. Propulsive power came from turbine engines driving counterrotating propellers within the shroud. Convair believed that the system was inherently more reliable than a conventional helicopter, and pointed out the only pilot control inputs involved directional control and setting rotor blade angle and engine speed. The crew of two occupied an articulating capsule on top of the shroud and was provided with a full array of sensors. The design team wrapped a small, highly aerodynamic fighter around two compact and high-thrust General Electric J85 engines, focusing on performance and a low cost of maintenance. Though primarily designed for a day air superiority role, the aircraft is also a capable ground-attack platform. The F-5A entered service in the early 1960s. During the Cold War, over 800 were produced through 1972 for U.S. allies. The F-5 was also developed into a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, the RF-5 Tigereye.

I have been wanting to do this for a while because I always thought it was facinating how much this painting already looked like a lowpoly 3d scene! I’ve also always been a fan of the aesthetic of the Futurist movement.
I finally sat down to do this because I realized that this would be perfect for this month’s lowpoly challenge, seeing as Futurism was an art movement that portrayed utopian visions of a high tech future. So with that in mind, this is my second entry to the UtopiaLPChallenge, this one being in the pastel color scheme rather then the neon one like my first submission. I would have used a longer chain of buildings to be more faithful to the original work, but wanted to ensure that I remained within the 2000 triangle limit (final count for scene is 1964 tris) of the challenge.
