This 3D data of Kokura Castle was made using photogrammetry. This is Avatta’s first attempt in using drones to make high quality 3D architectural scan. We have photographed over 1500 images from all directions and the data was processed using Agisoft Photoscan.
Kokura Castle of Kitakyushu, Japan was built by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602. It was the property of the Ogasawara clan (from Harima) between 1632 and 1860. The castle was burnt down in 1866 in the war between the Kokura and Chōshū clans.
Mori Ogai was based at the castle at the turn of the 19th-20th century when it was a military base.
The keep was reconstructed in 1959, and the castle was fully restored in 1990. The Matsumoto Seicho museum and castle garden were opened in 1998. This project feels like the reimaging of two separate projects I’ve done in the past. Mountain top castle, and lighthouse island. Both projects that at the time I was pleased with, but looking back on I felt weren’t my best.
I liked their premises a lot so I went ahead and merged the two together. Thus Castle Island was born!
Now for this scene, I did something I don’t often do when It comes to modelling scenes. I purchased pre-existing work. I know! Crazy, but I was having a strange amount of trouble modelling grass, I couldn’t get anything that looked “grass” you know?
I found an awesome little collection pack of low poly natural and organic models. Something I do tend to struggle with making so I was in awe that I found something that fit my style and could be a great leg up in terms of things I struggle with. Definitely going to see if I can leverage these assets in the future.
