As the other iconic aircraft of “Crimson Skies,” the Hughes P21-J Devastator simultaneously possesses a fantastical X-wing look, but also a “this could totally exist" feel. I’ve been obsessed with the setting and story of Crimson Skies ever since I first set eyes on the FASA tabletop game on a shelf of a game shop at the mall way back in 1998. One of the things that compelled me to experiment with and learn 3D modeling, texturing, and rendering as a hobbyist was seeing those awesome 3D renders of the fantastical aircraft of the game’s alternate 1930s setting on the back of the box and wondering: “how’d they do that?” So, finally, I’ve tackled recreating some of the planes myself! Since YuGiOh MasterDuel was released I instantly fell back in love with the cardgame I grew up with 😍 At first it was hard to catch up with the fastpaced playstyle nowadays, but its still a blast - no better way to pay Tribute than recreating the bossmonster of the deck I’m currently using ✌
The modelling was a very good practice for situations, where the references aren’t necesserily angled perfectly. This way, you definitely have to look at your model from all different angles all the time. But the project definitely deepened my love for creating Anime-Like / NPR Models iand give them my own touch.
