Though it ended up a bit too polygon-heavy, I am still happy how this turned out. My main difficulty was to render out curvature maps for the rust and scratch effects in Substance painter, but Xnormal does a good enough job after some tweaking around in Substance Painter. This is a model based off of Joe Petagno’s cover art for the 1986 album “Orgasmatron” by Motörhead. Petagno is the original artist behind Motörheads famous boar-like figurehead and the guy behind their album art. He has also created Led Zeppelins famous Icarus character and artwork for many other bands of different genres, even covers for sci-fi books. This is my submission for the Airship games art jam. The theme is ‘Growth’, so I went in a bit of a different direction to most, and a direction that’s closer to home. I’m hoping I’ve done the emotion justice here. I wanted to try and capture a sense of gentleness, of a single moment of growth that is simultaneously ground-breaking but also fragile and vulnerable - the eggshell softly cracking. In this project l I experimented with creating complex rig for the robotic suit (learned how to set up IK, apply movement constraints, and how to deal with cables etc.). I also wanted to try out a more complicated hairstyle, so I did a Google image search for “Badass Hairstyle” and ended up settling on a variation of the dutch braid. This time around I also made sure to maintain more consistent pixel density across the various textures. I sprinkled a bit of French all over the model to make it more Canadian.
