At first it was planned that the Transfiguration Cathedral would be larger than St. Paul's Cathedral in Rome. In 1787, Empress Catherine II laid the first stone in the foundation of the cathedral. The Austrian Emperor Joseph II laid the second stone in the foundation of the cathedral. The construction of the cathedral was resumed in 1830. In 1835, construction was completed. The cathedral was built in the style of classicism, designed by Andreyan Zakharov. La catedral de León fue diseñada sin claustro, pero finalmente se levantó entre finales del siglo xiii y principios del siglo xiv. Esta construcción cubrió la entrada norte que, desde entonces, quedó resguardada. Este claustro tiene una planta cuadrada de 30 metros de lado, posee seis intercolumnios por lado y 24 pilares en total, respondiendo a las proporciones establecidas en los claustros cistercienses. A su alrededor se agrupan diversas dependencias, entre ellas, el actual Museo Catedralicio.
