I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015: A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”.
My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures.
The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series.
Workflow:
No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability and reduced file size.
Done 100% in Blender3D.
What I Learned in the Process:
Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system.
I gained so much more confidence in Cycles materials, and particle effects as well.

This model is of a little-known ship from Empire Strikes Back, a tiny distant TIE shuttle that looks like a bomber with inverted wings, which Captain Needa uses to apologize to Vader in person. This model is mostly based on Jason Eaton’s rendition of the ship in the ‘TIE Fighter Owner’s Manual,’ but with some personal tweaks such as new engines and a thin viewport into the passenger compartment. 4 sets of textures- one for the wings, for the body, for the interior, and for the pilot. The interior and TIE pilot textures are the same as the ones in my regular TIE fighter model. If Sketchfab supported UDIMs, everything could be in 1 material using multiple UV tiles, but for now, it’s 5 separate materials (one more to be able to dial in the glass transparency, even though it uses the body textures.) As with my other star wars ships, this model was also modelled and textured in Blender and Microsoft Paint. JSPlacement was also used when creating the hull plating texture.
Edit; I was told that there were apparently 2 variants of this star destroyer; the imperial-I class, and the imperial-II class. I was also told that the one I have here resembles the imperial-II variant, but since I don’t know the differences between variants, I don’t really know.
